I have enough trouble as it is landing big cob - or any cob for that matter - from the surf. The idea of spinning for them and expecting to actually get a strike really frightens the living daylights out of me, but after seeing 2 cob of 15kg being landed on ESA tonight by the guest angler from PE made me think a bit. Doing some research on this form of catching cob brought very little information, and there are no pictures I could find on the Havoc lures, but after reading what anglers like neilg and other spinning and dropshot specialist had to say the picture became a little bit clearer.

The first important thing to do is to have a leap of faith - to get away from the conventional way of thinking and to believe, really believe, that this is possible. Come to think of it, cob in our area are normally caught on live mullet, and they are definately not a stationary target, so pulling an inviting lure slowly through the water started to make sense.

The second important issue to consider is a change of normal cob tackle. In stead of using medium to heavy tackle suitable to throw a 8 ounce sinker and bait we have to downsize to lighter tackle. Casting Rapalas or Halcos and Havocs are not the easiest thing in the world, but it does get a lot easier after you have downsized your rod, reel and line.

The best advice I could find was to change to a spinning reel and braid as soon as possible. With this setup you have way less chance of overthrows, you have a much longer casting distance even when there is a wind blowing, and the touch and feel of the braid makes even the light strikes big cob tend to make so much easier to notice.

Use a setup similar to a 10ft or 12 ft spinning reel rated to about 4 oz, match it to a 8000 spinning reel with 50 pd braid or a Daiwa 30 multiplier with .40 line and you should be set. The Havoc lures from Port Elizabeth seems to do the trick, but wide body Rapalas like the Giant Shad Raps also works extremely well. These lures with their bigger silhouette are easier for the cob to pick up, and when retrieved at slow speeds their actions are a lot better.

All geared up and with your mind set on landing monster cob on artificial lures you now have to find the perfect spot of water to test your skills. Cob are common in shallower coastal areas along sandy reefs and estuaries. Cob hunt mainly by smell and lateral line senses instead of by sight so they are very good at feeding at night and in dirty water. An ideal spot for Cob in the surf would be where you have white water breaking far out onto a sandbank with a deeper channel running just in front of it. You should wade in so that you can cast your lure onto the sandbank and then SLOWLY retrieve it back through the channel. The Cob normally swim through the channel and will also feed on the sandbank.

This is a great new facet of angling and something I am sure I will give a try in the near future.

The Fiji Islands are fortunate enough to enjoy Yellowfin tuna fishing pretty much all year round. The tuna migrate North past Fiji to the spawning grounds in the Indian Ocean and then come back through our waters on their return trip South.

They are voracious predators that specialise in balling up baitfish, then smashing into the tightly packed ball from below, often leaping clean into the air, such is the speed of their attack. Yellowfin maintain a higher body temperature than the surrounding ocean giving them the ability to display sustained high speed bursts and dogged determined hard fighting abilities. They have a relatively high percentage of dark meat as opposed to white meat which basically means they fight hard and can go on fighting hard for extended periods. Their dorsal and pectoral fins fold into slots on their body making them perfectly streamlined for high speed. Their dorsal & anal finlets are specifically designed for high speed stability and drag reduction. When you hook up to a Yellowfin you know you have a battle on your hands.

Yellowfin fight the way they feed. They smash a lure on the surface, put their head down and barrel off as deep as they can. They never fight on or close to the surface. (If one does, it's about to be nailed by a shark)

Once you (or they choose to) stop that deep run, the battle of wills commences. The tuna will use all its power to keep its head pointing downwards and you have to get its head pointing upwards. I am sure the modern reel manufacturers had tuna in mind when they first produced a two speed reel with a low gear ration for hauling stubborn fish out of the depths.

We always fish using equipment that complies with the IGFA Rules. When out trolling for marlin or yellowfin using heavy tackle, we use a 9 foot double connected to a 19ft wind on main leader to the snap swivel. The lure is rigged on a 6 - 9 foot terminal leader, depending on the lure size. Terminal leaders range from 200lb Ande for tuna bullets to 500lb Moimoi Marlin Ultra Hard for the big marlin lures. Most of the tuna lures are rigged on 130 - 200lb leader. Try to go as light as you can. Yellowfin Tuna have excellent eye sight and will shy away from a heavy leader.

The Fiji islands enjoy a whole variety of sport fish species from reef dwelling coral trout to oceanic blue marlin. Whilst we usually target particular species aboard our offshore game fishing vessel Bite Me at Matava in Fiji, we sometimes take resort guests out simply to catch dinner and have fun doing so.

Its general fishing (Otherwise known as "I don't care what I catch just as long as its big and tasty") so we cover all our bases and target a variety of different species.

Offshore, we run 15kg (30lb) Penn International 30Ts on Penn Millennium rods with a 9ft double connected to a short leader. In the winter time, (May - September) most lures are rigged on a wire trace because of the wahoo packs that congregate along the barrier reef.

The sample spread below should give you an idea of how we fish the outer barrier reef slopes and offshore blue water for anything and everything found out there.

From May to October, packs of wahoo congregate along the Great Astrolabe Barrier Reef. The average size of wahoo is about 50lbs with a good fish weighing in at 75lbs. Each wahoo pack usually has a fish of close to 100lbs. We almost always use lures when targeting wahoo however we often get jumped by fish when bait & switch fishing for sailfish. If your teaser is rigged with mono...wave bye bye to the end of your daisy chain....

The biggest problem we encounter is a mass attack, wahoo porpoising in at break-neck speed, every rod in the spread going off and then multiple bite-offs as other wahoo attack lines or swivels cutting through the water. We combat this by trolling a full spread until we find a pack and then switch to towing just two lures. Often, just a garfish (ballyhoo) on a two hook rig with a small pink skirt on the nose. Trolling speed is usually around 6-7kts. Most wahoo skippers around the world troll faster. Here, higher speeds do not increase strike rates. Last week on the Kadavu Seamount, we were feeding a skip bait back to a small blue marlin and a 60lb wahoo hit a Lumo green Pakula Sprocket that was only doing about 2kts.

All lures are rigged on at least 4 feet of 124lb 49 strand wire. (Longer if we thing sails are in the area) At this time of year, if it isn't on wire, it isn't coming back....

Fiji Inshore / Reef Pattern (The 'I don't care spread')

The Fiji islands enjoy a whole variety of sport fish species from reef dwelling coral trout to oceanic blue marlin. Whilst we usually target particular species aboard our game fishing vessels here at Matava in Fiji, Bite Me and Offensive Tackle, we sometimes take resort guests out simply to catch dinner and have fun doing so.

It's general fishing (Otherwise known as "I don't care what I catch just as long as its big and tasty") so we aim to cover all our bases and catch a variety of different species.

We run 15kg (30lb) Shimano TLD25 outfits on Excalibur roller tip rods with a 9ft double connected to a short leader. All minnows are rigged on a short single strand wire trace. The sample spread below should give you an idea of how we fish the inner lagoons and fringing reefs for anything and everything found there.
